W. Slough

March 24, 1926 — December 2, 2013

Goodland, Kansas resident Joyce Slough, 87, passed away Monday, December 2, 2013, at Good Samaritan Society—Sherman County in Goodland.

She was born March 24, 1926, near Waco, Texas, the daughter of Lois (Mosely) and Lee Mosley, and one of eight children.  Her father died when she was fifteen years old.  In the middle of the Depression years, her mother managed to raise them on a small farm near Gholson, Texas.  Joyce and her sisters loved to sing and were invited to sing at churches in the area.  She also loved sports and was particularly good at baseball and tennis.  All the children had a lot of work to do to keep the family together.

She left high school in her senior year to marry her “one and only” Marshall Slough in 1943. In 1946, they moved to the Panhandle of Texas, where they lived in Abernathy and then Plainview, before moving to Garden City, Kansas in 1961.  Along the way they had two sons Fred and Gary and two daughters Randi and Marsha. Joyce was always very active in the First Southern Baptist Church, and in all of the childrens’ school, church, and sports activities.  She wowed her children with home runs in fundraisers for the boys’ baseball teams, played Minnie Pearl at grade school carnivals, with a perfect “Howdy, I’m so proud to be here” in her new hat with the tag still attached, and made the family proud when she sang solos at church with her beautiful voice.  She was a friendly person who easily made many friends, who stayed in touch with her over the years.  She was always in her kids’ “corner”, and was extremely proud and encouraging of all their efforts.  Her brief time attending Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, Texas, was a time she treasured.  When she could, she worked at part-time jobs, while always doing the bookkeeping for Marshall’s businesses.  Her bowling team in Garden City made it to the State tournament.  After Marshall’s retirement, they moved back to Waco, Texas, to be near both of their families and later to Goodland, Kansas to be close to their son Gary Slough and his wife Diana.  Joyce and Marshall were always very close to their grandkids and brought them to their house over the summer.  Shana, Jason, Erin, Bryan, Tucker, and Cooper loved their “Grannie”, and she loved them.  Joyce and Marshall were especially bonded to cooper, who gave them focus in their later years.  Their great-grandchildren Alyssa, Keltan, J.J., Charlie, Max, Leo, Rylee, Stella, Frankie, and Royal were another joy to her.

Preceding her in death were her husband Marshall; daughter Randi; parents; siblings Irene, Alyene, Bill, Boyce, Tommy, and Mary Jo.

Surviving family includes children Fred Slough and Pat Housh of Kansas City, Missouri; Gary Slough and his wife Diana of Goodland; Marsha Slough and Jill Sibler of Redlands, California; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sister Freddie Anderson and her husband Alvin of Denton, Texas; brother-in-law Jake Sustala of Fort Worth; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be on Saturday, December 7, at 10:30 AM MT, at Koons Chapel in Goodland, with burial to follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

Friends may share their respects on Friday, from 3:00 until 7:00 PM MT, at Koons Chapel.  Memorials may be designated to Good Samaritan Society—Sherman County, and may be left at or mailed to Koons Funeral Home, 211 N. Main, Goodland, KS  67735-1555.  Online condolences:  www.koonsfuneralhome.com
