Lifelong Sherman County, Kansas resident Velma Lee Cooper, 85, died
Sunday, May 22, 2016, at Citizen’s Medical Center in Colby, Kansas.
She was born July 1, 1930, in Sherman County, Kansas, near Edson, the daughter of Edna Elizabeth (Thomas) and Samuel Harrison Larson. She graduated from Edson High School with the class of 1948, and then furthered her education at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. She worked as a teacher for two years.
On June 15, 1952, she and Gary Ray Cooper were married in Goodland, Kansas. They lived and worked on the family farm northwest of Brewster. Velma loved selling Avon and being with people. Her family was the highlight of her life.
Preceding her in death were her husband Gary Cooper, son Casey Cooper, her parents, and brother Lawrence Larson.
Surviving family includes her three children Galen Cooper, of Goodland; Vicki Beiser of Brewster; Darla Rice and her husband Shanon of Brewster; six grandchildren John Cooper and his wife Andria, Chad Beiser and his wife Sarah, Jill Reid and her husband Jeremy, Dustin Cheney and his wife Susan, Hayley Rice, Shane Rice; four great-grandchildren Devon and Skylar Cooper, and Caitlyn and Roslyn Cheney; and other family and friends.
The memorial service will be on Friday, May 27, at 2:00 PM Central Time (1:00 PM Mountain Time) at the Brewster Community Church. Inurnment will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.
Memorials may be designated to the Brewster Senior Center, and may be left at the service or mailed to Koons Funeral Home, 211 N. Main, Goodland, KS 67735-1555.
