Ruth Ross

February 26, 1929 — August 14, 2014

Longtime Goodland, Kansas resident Ruth E. (Briney) Ross, 85, died Thursday, August 14, 2014, in Goodland at Good Samaritan Society—Sherman County.

She was born February 26, 1929, at McDonald, Kansas, the daughter of Eva L. (Coppoc) and P. Walker Briney.  She attended rural schools and graduated from McDonald High School.  After graduating, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas. Later, she taught at a rural one-room school in Saline County, Kansas.

On August 30, 1949, she and Chester W. Ross were married at a garden service at her farm home, east of Goodland, by Reverend James Coppoc. She and Chet raised a family of five:  James, Deborah, Judith, Martha, and John.  Ruth was first a mother, a grandmother, and a wife, and she enjoyed keeping up with her larger Briney family.  She sang in church and college choirs, and played the piano and organ. She loved cooking, knitting, puzzles, art, teaching Sunday School, and being involved in many social clubs including PEO.  She volunteered at church, with Meals on Wheels, and the Hospital Auxiliary.  Naturally, she traveled with her husband of sixty-five years across the USA and numerous foreign countries, while he served in the US Air Force.

Her memberships included United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, their choir, and their volunteer teachers.  PEO, Hospital Auxiliary, Redwood EHU, 4-H leader, Girl Scout leader, Red Cross, USAF Officer Wives, Carnegie Arts Center, Sherman County Historical Society, and Pride of the Prairie Orchestra were among other activities.

Preceding her in death were her parents; brother Russell Briney; grandparents Reverend and Mrs. James Coppoc; son-in-law Major Robert Cutler; and grandson Peter Cutler.

Surviving family includes her husband Chester Ross; son James Ross, daughters Deborah Edwards and her husband Mike; Judith Cutler; Martha Kruger and her husband Brian; son John Ross and his wife Stacey; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Mary Ann Briney; sisters Louise Hanable and her husband Hal; Evalyn Berndt and her husband Kenneth; brother Dwight Briney and his wife Kathy; nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 20, 2014, 10:30 AM MT, at the Goodland United Methodist Church, with Reverend Lew Van Der Wege officiating. Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 19, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM MT, at Koons Chapel.
