Longtime Sharon Springs, Kansas resident Ruth Maxine (Tyrrell) Morford, 94, passed away Sunday, February 23, 2014, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, Kansas.
She was born on January 21, 1920, at Jennings, Kansas, the daughter of Parthena Elizabeth (Stuart) and William Warder Tyrrell. Ruth was the youngest of ten siblings who preceded her in death: Nancy Rosetta Tyrrell, Bertha Wheelock, Letha Carson, Archie Tyrrell, Edith Fulton, Budd Tyrrell, Tobie Tyrrell, Bunnie Tyrrell and Roy Tiny Tyrrell. Ruth graduated from high school in Lenora, Kansas, and, was married to Warren Ward “Jiggs” Morford on June 15, 1938. To this union was born four children: Sandra Kay, Mary Jane, Betty Jo, and William Ward “Bill”. Ruth and Jiggs enjoyed fifty-one years of marriage.
Ruth and Jiggs worked side by side, publishing the Western Times in Sharon Springs, Kansas, for thirty-nine years. Her memberships included Eastern Star in Pryor, Oklahoma; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Goodland, Kansas.
We have lost a member of “The Greatest Generation”. Kansas Jayhawks Basketball has lost a dedicated and loyal fan. The Morford family will forever miss the greatest mother, grandma, and great-grandma. “Rest in Peace.”
Preceding her in death were her parents; siblings; husband “Jiggs”; son-in-law Larry W. Smith; and grandson Daren Clark Boston.
Surviving family includes four children Sandra Kay (Duane) Boston of Lake Jackson, Texas; Mary Jane (Jack) Howey of Brightwood, Virginia; Betty Jo Smith of Houston, Texas; and William Ward “Bill” Morford (JoAnn Wilcox) of Quinter; grandchildren Daena Kay (Alex) Gill, Michael Lee (Kathy) Howey, Pamela Jane (Michael) Weakley; Bradley Warren Boston; Lisa Jo (Michael) Franco; Christina Ruth (Jesse) Cortez; Lace Morford; Tiffany (Chris) Figueroa; Chase (Jadie) Morford; great-grandchildren Joshua and Logan Howey; Justin Weakley; Seth Michael Drone; Denae and Darcy Boston, Jordan and Drew Franco; Keegan and Kaiser Lopez; Shayleigh, Charmane, Riggin, and Payson Morford.
The funeral will be Friday, February 28, at 10:30 AM MT, at the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church, with Pastor Keith Anglemyer officiating. Burial will follow in the Sharon Springs Cemetery.
Friends may share their respects on Thursday, from 3:00 until 7:00 PM MT, at Koons Funeral Home in Sharon Springs.
Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be designated to the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church, the Wallace County Family Practice, The Greeley County Health Services, or The American Heart Association, and may be left at the services, or mailed to Koons Funeral Home, 211 N.
