Roger Lee Collins, 79, passed away at the Logan County Senior Living Facility in Oakley, Kansas on April 11, 2025.
He was born on April 19, 1945 to Lewis F. Collins and Mae G. (Carmichael) in St. Francis, Kansas. He grew up in Goodland and graduated from Sherman Community High School in 1963.
Roger worked as a department administrative dispatcher for the Goodland Police Department and Sherman County Sheriff Office for 25 years. Roger was most proud of his time as a dispatcher. He had a very commanding voice that everyone who had ever heard him knew him by his voice. He received recognitions for being cool under pressure and for his dedication to the department and Sherman County.
Roger was a member at the First Christian Church. He enjoyed going to bible studies and Sunday school. He was on the Goodland Churches Thrift Shop Board for 16 years and recently moved to Honorary Board Member when his health began to decline. He served two 3 year terms as President of the board, one term in 2002, and the second in 2010, and then as Vice president in 2014. He received a certificate of appreciation for his board director’s membership in recognition for dedication and leadership for the mission of the Goodland Churches Thrift Shop. He was a very kind and caring son, and he took great care of his parents as they aged. They had several Boston Terriers over the years. He also talked about his first dog Suzy Q often.
He loved double cheeseburgers and fries from McDonalds and would eat them as often as he could sometimes multiple times a day.
He is survived by his friends Kim and JJ Margheim of Goodland, Kansas and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lewis and Mae, his two sisters Joann Collins and Donna Armstrong.
Memorial contributions may be made out to the First Christian Church and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.
