Longtime Weskan, Kansas resident Robert M. Waugh, 81, died Sunday, November 11, 2012.  He died peacefully on Veterans Day in St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver after fighting valiantly for six weeks surrounded by family and friends.
Robert Mason Waugh was born on August 22, 1931, in Liberal, Kansas, the 13th child of Charles and Mabel Waugh.  Later, the family moved to Weskan, Kansas, where Bob grew up.  After graduating from Weskan high school, he volunteered for a three year tour of duty with the United States Marines, where he achieved the rank of sergeant.  Bob participated in operations against enemy forces in South and Central Korea from June 1951 to July 1952.  He was honorably discharged in 1953, after which he married Shirley Ann Sellers in Belmont, NC, on June 4, 1954.  They began their married life, farming in Weskan, Kansas.  Their first child, Martha, was born in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado in 1957.
Bob completed barber college in Durham, NC, and then went to work with Shirley’s dad at his barber shop in Belmont, NC.   Later, the family moved to Tacoma, Washington, where Bob was employed by his brother-in-law as a carpenter.  During those five years, a son, Martin, was born in 1960.
His farming roots kept calling, and in 1966 the family moved back to Weskan.  He spent the rest of his life loving his work and being involved in community services.  These included serving for 15 years as one of the first EMT’s in Wallace County and also serving as a Deputy Sheriff for several years.  He also served on several boards which included the Wallace County Co-Op, Weskan Water Board, and Fire Board, and Cheyenne Wells Hospital Board.  He also served as a trustee and other offices at the Weskan Methodist church.  His passions included family, faith, and politics.
He is preceded in death by his parents and by 9 siblings: Edna Akers; Georgia Doop; Alan Waugh; Dorothy Waugh; Arthur Waugh; Edward Waugh; Jean Fister; Marian Vincent; and John Waugh.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of 58 years; his daughter, Martha and her husband, Blane Hanavan of Littleton, CO; their three children, Abby and her husband, Jared Myers and the first great grandbaby due in December; Sam and his fiancé, Kara Benton; Corrie and her fiancé, Sam Meyersick;  and his son, Martin and his wife, April, of Washington, DC.  He is also survived by his older brother, Elmer Waugh and his family of Slaton, TX; his sister, Frances Waugh Maricle of Goodland, KS, and her family; and the many nieces, nephews  and cousins of his 9 other siblings.  He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Ted Sellers and his wife, Dollie, of Mt. Holly, NC, and their family.  He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by many family and friends.
The funeral will be Wednesday, November 14, at 2:00 PM MT, at the United Methodist Church in Sharon Springs, with Pastor Tim Cress officiating.  Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Sharon Springs Cemetery.

Friends may share their respects on Tuesday, from 3:00 until 7:00 PM MT, at Koons Funeral Home in Sharon Springs.
