Former longtime Sharon Springs, Kansas resident Paul L. Walker, 93, died Monday, January 28, 2013, on the day of his 46th wedding anniversary, at Fulton Manor in Fulton, Missouri.
He was born April 27, 1919, at Benkelman, Nebraska, the son of Emma (Gross) and George Lawrence Walker. He graduated as valedictorian and class president from Wallace County Community High School with the class of 1937. He attended one semester at Kansas State University, but was then called home to help on the family farm. At age 19, he served as Night Marshall for the City of Sharon Springs. He later served as Wallace County Sheriff and Under Sheriff, as well as Wallace County Appraiser.
Most of his life was spent in farming and soil conservation. He and his brother Frank built many of the roads and farm ponds in the county. He and his nephew Bruce built terraces from Nebraska and all the way to Texas. On December 5, 1941, he and Margaret Frances Thompson were married, and they had two children Barry Vohn and Linda Kathleen. After the death of Margaret on August 28, 1964, he and Frances Margaret “Meg” Summers Folbre were married on January 28, 1967.
Paul was a charter member of the local Rotary Club, and the Kansas/Oklahoma Pitch Association. He enjoyed playing bridge, pitch, and poker with his friends and family, all the way down to his great-grandchildren. Just two weeks ago, he had played Texas Hold’em, going down in defeat to his grandson Darin and great-granddaughter Maggie, age 11, and he loved every minute of it. Many of you will remember the “Snow Shack” that he and Meg pulled all over the United States, bringing smiles to kids and adults alike. He also had a passion for music. He served as stand-up-bass and banjo player for some of the “not so famous” groups, such as the ‘Red Hots”, “Rhythm Wranglers”, and “Musical Maniacs”.
Preceding him in death were his parents, first wife Margaret Frances (Thompson) Walker, daughter Kathy Larson and her husband Paul Larson, brothers Orville, Frank, and Ralph, and sister Freda Majors.
Surviving family includes his wife Meg Walker of Fulton, Missouri; children Barry Walker of Mound City; Bill Folbre and his wife Caren of San Diego, California; Cyndee Scott and her husband Jim of St. Louis, Missouri; Mark Folbre and his wife Charlotte of Hatton, Missouri; twelve grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was truly a great man and will be missed by many.
The funeral will be Saturday, February 2, at 10:00 AM MT, at Hi-Plains Baptist Church in Sharon Springs, with Pastor Bruce Burfield officiating. Burial will follow in the Sharon Springs Cemetery.
Friends may share their respects on Friday, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM MT, at Koons Funeral Home in Sharon Springs.
