Lee Highland

January 18, 1925 — September 30, 2013

Lee Rivers Highland, 88, formally of Brewster and Goodland, Kansas, died Monday, September 30, 2013, in Brooksville, Florida.

He was born January 18, 1925, in Greeley, Colorado, the son of Earnest and Fannie Highland.  The family moved to Brewster, Kansas, where Lee grew up and graduated from Brewster High School in 1944.

He began working for the Postal Service at age 14 and served as a rural mail carrier in Brewster, Kansas, and later in Goodland, Kansas, for over 30 years before retiring.  He moved to Brooksville, Florida, in 2010 to live with his daughter Emma Lou.  He made many lifelong friends in his time.  He believed that each of us have a duty to serve if called and that we each must honor and care for our veterans.
Lee served in World War II as an Army surgical nurse.  His decorated service was in the Pacific during the re-taking of the islands.  He was on the troop ship headed to Japan for the invasion when the surrender occurred.  He was a life member of the VFW and American Legion.

He married Dorothy Fiechter October 31, 1944.   She preceded him in death February 8, 2002.

He is survived by his children Ronald Highland (Linda) of Wamego, Kansas; Emma Lou Taylor of Brooksville, Florida; and Janice Owens (Rod) of Edson, Kansas.  Among those also mourning are his five grandchildren Jacen Owens and his wife Natalie, Christel Highland, Garth Highland, Zachary Taylor, and Clinton Taylor; and six great-grandchildren Clive, Otto, Leah, Hunter, Jagger, and Cannon.
He is survived by two brothers Glen Highland of Wichita, Kansas; and Floyd Highland of Colby, Kansas; and one sister Ethyl Gaskill of Nampa, Idaho.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers Jay Highland, Ted Highland, and Earl Highland; and one sister Reva Smith.

A memorial service will be held October 11, 2013, 10:30 AM MT, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Goodland, where he was a member. Pastor Darian Hybl will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Brewster Cemetery.  Memorials may be given in Lee’s name to the Emmanuel Lutheran Church or the V.F.W., in care of the Koons Funeral Home, 211 N. Main, Goodland, KS  67735-1555.
