Longtime Sherman County, Kansas resident L. Maxine Query, 96, died Tuesday, September 27, 2016, at Prairie Senior Living Complex in Colby, Kansas.
Maxine was born December 19, 1919, at Norcatur, in Decatur County, Kansas, the daughter of Nellie Blye (Shirley) and Leland Childers. She attended Beaver Valley rural school in Cheyenne County, located near Leland and Nellie’s farm, and graduated from Bird City High School with the class of 1937. Following graduation, she furthered her education with normal training, preparing her to teach at Beaver Valley rural school for two years.
On May 20, 1939, she and Elmer L. Query were married at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Bird City. They established a farmstead in Llanos
Township, Sherman County, Kansas. Elmer and Maxine celebrated sixty-five years of marriage. In 1978, they moved from the farm to Goodland, where they resided for nearly thirty years. Maxine cherished her roles as wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her memberships included Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Goodland, and Llanos Home Demonstration Unit. She enjoyed reading, flower gardening, knitting, and hand-quilting.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Elmer Query, who died February 19, 2005; three infant sisters; two sisters Vera Weigel and LaRhea Parker.
Surviving family includes Clair Query and his wife Eunice of Colby; Sharon Layman and her husband Rod Hannahs of The Villages, Florida; Ann Bay and her husband Darrell of College Station, Texas; Bryan Query and his wife Cathy of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Alan Query and his wife Ardy of Edson; fourteen grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday, October 1, at 10:00 AM MT, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Goodland, with Pastor Darian Hybl officiating. Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery. Friends may share their respects at the church one hour prior to the service.
