Lifelong Wallace County, Kansas resident Iris D. Schmalzried, 86, died Friday, October 17, 2014, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, Kansas.
She was born April 16, 1928, in a sod house south of Sharon Springs, Kansas, the daughter of Vera (Nealis) and Charles L. Senger. In 1947, she graduated from Wallace County Community High School in Sharon Springs.
On June 1, 1947, she and Harold Daniel Schmalzried were married at the Lane County Courthouse in Dighton, Kansas. Iris and Harold were married for sixty-five years. She was right beside everyone in the hay fields with the cows and horses her whole life. Iris loved her dog, as anyone who knew her realized. She liked writing letters to former classmates, relatives, and friends.
Preceding her in death were her husband Harold Schmalzried, who died December 6, 2012, and her parents.
Surviving family includes her daughter Lyndel Adams and her husband Duane of Russell; her son Theron Schmalzried and his wife Pam of Wiggins, Colorado; two grandchildren Magdalena “Maggie” Allen; and Anitra Uphoff and her husband Brent; and one great-grandchild Jace Uphoff.
The funeral will be on Wednesday, October 22, at 10:30 AM MT, at the United Methodist Church in Sharon Springs, with Pastor Keith Anglemyer officiating. Burial will follow in the Sharon Springs Cemetery.
Friends may share their respects on Tuesday, from 5:00 until 7:00 PM MT, at Koons Funeral Home in Sharon Springs.
