Lifelong Sherman County, Kansas resident Irene Jewell, 91, died Saturday, April 4, 2015, at Wallace County Community Care Center in Sharon Springs, Kansas.
Ethel Irene was born February 23, 1924, at Ruleton, Kansas, the daughter of Murel J. (Moore) and Ralph M. Purvis. She graduated from Sherman Community High School with the class of 1942.
In August of 1944, she and Russell Clark were married. Among her occupations were school teacher in rural Sherman County, dental assistant to Dr. Steever, orphanage matron at Denver, Colorado, and caregiver at Golden West in Goodland. Her hobbies included making hand-sewn quilts and hand-sewn dolls, which family and friends delighted in receiving from her.
Preceding her in death were her parents; brother Guy Purvis; sisters Dorothy Purvis and Minnie Brazda; brothers-in-law Emil Brazda, Oscar Aaron, J.M. Sears, and Bill James.
Surviving family includes her daughter Renee Rhode and her husband Harold of Goodland; four grandsons Larry Dreiling, Jr. of Plano, Texas; Chris Dreiling and his wife Linda of Lake Worth, Florida; Kevin Dreiling of Plano, Texas; Darren Dreiling of Australia; eight great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two brothers Wayne Purvis and his wife Gerry of Billings, Montana; Elmer Purvis and his wife Joyce of Goodland; two sisters Ruth Sears of Rogers, Arkansas; JoAnn Aaron James of Wichita; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The funeral will be Thursday, April 9, at 10:30 AM MT, at Koons Chapel in Goodland, with Pastor Clifford Middlebrooks officiating. Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.
Friends may share their respects on Thursday, from 9:30 until 10:30 AM MT, at Koons Chapel.
