Helen Zaborski, 90, resident of Prairie Senior Living Complex in Colby, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at Citizens Medical Center in Colby.
She was born July 24, 1924, at Bridgeport, Ohio, the daughter of Pauline (Korn) and Bruno Bitker. She attended Sherman Elementary School and graduated from Woodward High School, both in Toledo, Ohio. Following graduation, she worked on an assembly line that was responsible for building jeeps for the United States military during World War II.
On October 25, 1945, she and Harry Zaborski were married, and seven years later their daughter Judy was born in Toledo. The family moved to Denver, Colorado in 1955 and their second daughter Joanne was born. The family lived there for thirty years. When the girls started school, Helen learned to drive a vehicle for the first time, and she began working as a cook and baker at the Woolworths department store. Her pastries were delicious, and before long, her pies gained a great reputation.
In 1983, they moved to a farm north of Brewster, Kansas. A few years later, they separated. Helen moved to Colby, and began working as head cook at Lantern Park Nursing Home. She enjoyed cooking and baking for all the residents for more than twenty years. It wasn’t until her 80th birthday that she decided to retire.
In her time of relaxing, she enjoyed working in a vegetable garden, tending to her rose garden, and attending church services and prayer groups. She was a dedicated Bronco football fan, and she always looked forward to the fall season when their games could be watched on television. She also enjoyed doing various sewing projects and crocheting blankets for the grandkids. Helen was very proud and blessed to be a part of her family activities. She loved her family very much, and always looked forward to visits and celebrating holidays with the grandkids and great-grandkids.
Preceding her in death were her parents; twin siblings Leonard and Leona; daughter Joanne Stephens.
Surviving family includes her daughter Judy McKee and her husband Jim of Brewster; 11 grandkids; 25 great-grandkids; and 1 great-great-grandchild; son-in-law Paul Stephens of Colby.
