Longtime Wallace County, Kansas resident Harold Daniel Schmalzried, 90, died Thursday, December 6, 2012, at Wallace County Community Care Center in Sharon Springs.
He was born September 4, 1922, at Dighton, Kansas, the son of Marie M. (Bahm) and Carl DeLoss Schmalzried. He graduated from Dighton High School with the class of 1940.
He served his country in the United States Navy from August 8, 1944 through May 27, 1946. On June 1, 1947, he and Iris Daphane Senger were married at the Lane County Courthouse in Dighton, Kansas, and they made their home in Wallace County, where they farmed and ranched. He enjoyed being with his children, working with them in various activities. Working with the 4-H horse project was his favorite. He also enjoyed oil field research projects.
Preceding him in death were his parents, brother Raymond Schmalzried, and sister Luella Schmalzried.
Surviving family includes his wife Iris Schmalzried of Sharon Springs; daughter Lyndel Adams and her husband Duane of Russell; son Theron Schmalzried and his wife Pam of Wiggins, Colorado; two grandchildren Magdalena “Maggie” Allen and Anitra Uphoff; one great-grandson Jace Uphoff; brother Marvin Schmalzried and his wife Judy of Sarasota, Florida; sister Berniece Moore of Dighton; sister Dorothy Lewis on Watonga, Oklahoma; sister Cleta Rogers and her husband Lynn of Centerville, Ohio; brother Don Schmalzried and his wife Beverly of Johnson City, Tennessee; sister Janetha Girrotto and her husband John of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and sister-in-law Georgia Schmalzried of Plymouth, Michigan.
The funeral will be Tuesday, December 11, at 10:00 AM MT, at the United Methodist Church in Sharon Springs, with Pastor Keith Anglemyer and Reverend Paul McNall officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Sharon Springs Cemetery.
Friends may share their respects on Monday, from 3:00 until 7:00 PM MT, at Koons Funeral Home in Sharon Springs.
