Goodland, Kansas resident Garland Kay “Kayo” McGillivray, 83, died Sunday, May 22, 2016.
He was born December 20, 1932, at Ulysses, Kansas, the son of Esther (Withrow) and Gerald Guy McGillivray. He graduated from Ulysses High School with the class of 1950, and furthered his education at Fort Hays State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1954.
From 1955-1957, he served his country in the United States Army. On September 23, 1956, he and Marsha Lohr were married at Baumholder, Germany. He was a teacher and coach at Kanorado, Syracuse, and Liberal Schools until 1963. From 1964 through 1996, he was Director of Parks and Recreation in Liberal, and then in Kenai, Alaska.
In 1996, Kayo and Marsha moved to Goodland. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Elks, and a member of Loyal Order of Moose, Kiwanis, and Lions.
Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers Doug and Don, and sister Sally.
Surviving family includes his wife Marsha McGillivray of Goodland; three sons Greg McGillivray and his wife Pat of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Scott McGillivray of Goodland; Tod McGillivray and his wife Shannon of Soldotna, Alaska; four grandchildren Alex, Tyler, Kodi, and Kalyn McGillivray; brother Mont McGillivray and his wife Kathleen of Bella Vista, Arkansas; and sister Lynne Fox and her husband Jim of Dighton.
The memorial service will be on Thursday, May 26, at 10:30 AM MT, at Koons Chapel in Goodland, with Pastor Lyn Linde officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.
Memorials may be designated to Fort Hays State University Athletic Department, and may be left at the service or mailed to Koons Funeral Home, 211 N. Main, Goodland, KS 67735-1555.
