Longtime Weskan resident Flora H. “Flo” Loftin, 98, died on Saturday, November 30, 2013, at Wallace County Community Care Center in Sharon Springs, Kansas.
Flo was born near Francis, Oklahoma, on May 6, 1915, the eighth of ten children born to Robert Lee and Ida Mae (Coffee) Steelman. She attended public school at Sasakwa, Oklahoma, graduating in 1933. After graduation, she worked as a housekeeper/nanny in Konawa, Oklahoma. She married Eugene William “Gene” Loftin in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, on August 25, 1937. To this union were born three children: Carol Ann, Dana Eugene and Robert Morris.
Flo returned to college after Gene was seriously injured in 1960 and was unable to continue working. She graduated from East Central State College, Ada, Oklahoma, in 1967, with a degree in education. Teaching brought her to Kansas in 1969, where she taught home economics at Weskan High School.
Flo was an accomplished seamstress, making most of her own clothes, as well as for many others. She loved visiting with friends, playing dominoes, fishing, and crossword puzzles. Her favorite activity was watching her grandkids grow, attending their plays, concerts, and sporting events.
Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, brothers: Elmer, Lee, Lawrence, Sydney, Bailey, and Raymond; sisters: Faye Jones, Mamie “Joan” Steelman, and Hazel Harter; and son-in-law William A. Peek, Jr..
Surviving family includes daughter Carol Ann Peek of VanAlstyne, Texas; sons Dana E. of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Robert M. of Weskan; eight grandchildren: Sean, Melisa, Robert Jr., Lucas, Drew, Cody, Stephen, and Megan Loftin; and seven great-grandchildren: Tyler, Levi, Gavin, Kian, Wyatt, and Annalise Loftin, and Feasha (Loftin) Powell.
The funeral will be Tuesday, December 3, at 10:00 AM MT, at Hi-Plains Baptist Church in Sharon Springs, with Pastor Rick DeWees officiating. Burial will follow in the Weskan Cemetery at Weskan, Kansas.
Friends may share their respects on Monday, from 3:00 until 6:00 PM MT, at Koons Funeral Home in Sharon Springs.
