Longtime rural Kanorado, Kansas resident Fern Estes, 100, died Sunday, August 14, 2016, in Goodland at Good Samaritan Society—Sherman County.
She was born July 25, 1916, on the family farm northeast of Modoc, Kansas, the daughter of Nora Mae (Huffman) and Melvin Hayden Kendall. She graduated from high school at Brandon, Colorado.
On July 25, 1934, she and Raymond Noah Estes were married at Tribune, and they made their home in rural Greeley County, Kansas. In 1941, they moved to rural Wallace County, Kansas, and continued farming at their Peaceful Valley ranch, south of Kanorado. Her memberships included Kanorado PRIDE, Kanorado United Methodist Church, and a home demonstration unit. She enjoyed reporting the rain and snow amounts received to KLOE radio. Hobbies she enjoyed included doing handwork on quilts, writing poetry, and sending hand-crafted greeting cards to her friends.
Preceding her in death were her husband Raymond Estes, one grandson, one great-grandson, and eleven siblings.
Surviving family includes her five children Ronald Estes of Aurora, Colorado; Hazel Estes of Kanorado; Stan Estes and his wife Beverly of Scandia; Arlene Stephenson and her husband Tom of Cross Plains, Texas; Bryan Estes and his wife Kathey “Kitty” of Jacksonville, Florida; ten grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be Thursday, August 18, at 10:30 AM MT, at the United Methodist Church in Kanorado, with Pastor Gordon Pettibone officiating. Burial will follow in the Kanorado Cemetery.
Friends may share their respects on Wednesday, August 17, from 5:00 until 7:00 PM MT, at Koons Funeral Home in Goodland.
