Former longtime Goodland, Kansas resident Dorothy Horton, 99, died Thursday, March 26, 2015, at Legacy Center Assisted Living in Canon City, Colorado.
Dorothy Pauline was born August 12, 1915, near Lucas, in Russell County, Kansas, the daughter of Hannah Elizabeth (Inman) and Arthur Stokley Rice. She attended Fairview School in Russell County.
On October 6, 1943, she and Chester Hedrick Horton were married at Goodland, Kansas. They made their first home in Wallace County, Kansas, later moving to Goodland, where they resided for fifty-three years. They owned and operated Horton’s Body and Repair Shop for forty years, where Chet was the craftsman/artist who repaired cars, and Dorothy was the bookkeeper/general manager. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Goodland.
Preceding her in death were her husband Chet Horton; two brothers Chet Rice and Joseph Rice; four sisters Ellen Ahrens, Kathrine Krause, Pansy Downtain, and Florence Rice.
Surviving family includes her son Jerrell J. “Jerry” Horton and his wife Marilyn of Canon City, Colorado; five grandchildren Jerrell L. Horton and his wife Tammie, Tina Vincent and her husband Bob, Shawn Horton and his wife Dana, Chris Ray and his wife Amber, and Maranda Ray; eleven great-grandchildren Bryna Horton, Britton Horton, Erin Horton, Tiana Stebens, Tiara Stebens, Chelsie Horton, Aubrey Horton, Evan Lujan, Kaylee Lujan, Alexander Ray, and Zachery Ray; two great-great-grandchildren Shawn Hernandez and Riplea Rudzik; sister Alberta Hayden of Goodland; sister-in-law Vida Rice of Middleton, Idaho; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
The funeral will be Saturday, April 4, at 3:00 PM MT, at Koons Chapel in Goodland, with burial following in the Goodland Cemetery.
Friends may share their respects on Saturday, from 1:00 until 3:00 PM MT, at Koons Chapel.
