Dorothy J. Arnold, 82, of Goodland, Kansas, was born April 3, 1932, in Benkelman, Nebraska, the daughter of John and Alice (Sparks) Ellis. She died Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society-Sherman County, in Goodland, Kansas.
Dorothy attended and graduated from Benkelman High School. She graduated from McCook Community College in McCook, Nebraska, and taught school in District 66 from 1950 to 1952.
On April 18, 1952, she was united in marriage to Vinton L. “Shorty” Pettit. They lived in St. Francis, Kansas, and later moved to Goodland, Kansas. To this union three daughters Gina, Trina and Julie were born. They were divorced in 1972.
On November 19, 1982, she married Robert Arnold. Robert brought his three daughters and one son into the marriage. She worked as a barmaid, and ironed clothes for people. She also worked at Pikes Stores. She enjoyed embroidery, reading, working in her flower beds, and having her grandkids during the summer.
Preceding Dorothy in death were her parents, husband Robert Arnold, one daughter, three brothers, and several grandchildren.
Surviving family members are her daughters Gina Reed (Alan Mills), Trina Schnug and husband Roy, and Julie Pettit (Anthony Rodriguez); son-in-law Robert Reed; sister Shirley (June) Reiman; brother Lyle “Newt” (Delma) Ellis; and two sisters-in-law Kit Ellis and Mary Lou Walwer. Also surviving are Robert’s children Bob (Helen) Arnold, Rita (Keith) Snyder, and Becky (Tom) Rauh. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Dorothy will be Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at 2:00 PM MT, at Koons Funeral Home in Goodland, Kansas, with Pastor Darian Hybl officiating. Cremation will follow the service and her ashes will be inurned in the Benkelman, Nebraska Cemetery on Saturday, July 5, 2014, at 11:00 AM MT. Friends may share their respects from 9:00 AM MT until time of the service on Wednesday at Koons Funeral Home.
Memorials may be designated to Hospice Services of Sherman County or Northwest Kansas Animal Shelter, and may be left at the service or mailed to Koons Funeral Home, 211 N Main, Goodland, KS 67735-1555.
