Donald Duane Stewart passed away on March 27, 2025 in Goodyear Arizona, at the age of 82 years old.
Don was born on July 14, 1942 in Goodland, Kansas to Howard E. Stewart and Grace Eileen (Farwell) Stewart. He was the second child born into the family with his sister Anita being the oldest, followed by his sister Ruth and Brother Stan. Don graduated from Burlington High School in 1960.
On June 16, 1963 Don married Dianne Harter. They were married for nine years. They had two children; John born in 1965 and Dawn Ann born in 1969. In 1972, Don tragically lost his leg to bone cancer, changing his life forever but his strong will and determination never let it hold him back, still enjoying life and doing what he was able to do.
While in Denver in the hospital, he had this special nurse named Pauline that he took a liking to and would always give a hard time, she took such good care of him that he decided to make her a “keeper” for the rest of his life. Pauline and her 3 kids; Arlene, Tim and Marlo moved to Burlington and on March 2, 1974, Don and Pauline were married in Denver, CO. They lived in Burlington in which they spent 51 loving years together in their forever home, which they had built. They spent many Sundays at Bronco games and enjoyed traveling. Some places they visited were Hawaii, Jamaica, Spain, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Alaska and the Louis & Clark Route.
Don and Pauline spent a lot of good times with friends and family on weekends going on rod runs in his 1931 Ford Model-A Coupe. Don was an avid golfer and enjoyed being on the golf league for many years. They were also known to call friends and decide to drive into Denver for dinner and drive back home that same evening. Don loved spending time with family and he loved to hear the words “Dad” and “Grandpa.” He loved his family dearly.
Don was baptized and a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church and served on the Burlington City council from 1978-1991, with terms of being mayor pro tem. He always made sure the police knew that if any of his kids were doing anything wrong, to not treat them any different just because he was on the city council. Don and Pauline enjoyed being part of the Prairie Carriage Club and the Burlington Good Sams Camping Club amongst many good friends.
Don went to work for Burlington Auto Parts in 1963. He acquired partial ownership in 1965, the controlling share in 1969 and finally full ownership in 1979. After retiring from Burlington Auto Parts in 2000, Don and Pauline bought a camper and decided to become “snowbirds” and spend the winters in Arizona. Through the years the months they spent in Arizona seemed to be growing, so they decided to buy a second home, making new memories with many wonderful friends.
Those left to mourn him are, his beloved wife, Pauline of 51 years, son John and his wife Cindy of Burlington, CO; daughter Dawn Ann and her husband Dan of Goodland, KS; daughter Arlene and her husband Rocky of Windsor, CO; son Tim of Burlington, CO; daughter Marlo and her husband Tom of Sachse, TX; nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild, sister Ruth and her husband Jim of Monument, CO; sister-in-law Nancy Stewart of Burlington, CO and many nieces and nephews. As well as many friends in Burlington and Goodyear Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Eileen, his brother Stan, his sister Anita, and his grandson Brandon Stewart.
Memorial contributions may be made out to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.
