Longtime Goodland, Kansas resident Alva Lee “Butch” Vandiver, 63, died Monday, December 14, 2015, at Goodland Regional Medical Center.
He was born August 9, 1952, at Russell, Kansas, the son of Mildred (Diebert) and Alva Vandiver, Sr. He attended schools in Salina and graduated with the class of 1970 from Salina High School.
On April 19, 1971, he and Karen Chatfield were married at Salina, Kansas, and they made their home in Sherman County. Butch worked for the Sherman County Road and Bridge department for 42 years. His memberships included the Lions Club and Sherman County Community Services.
Preceding him in death were his his parents Alva and Mildred Vandiver; foster parents Wayne and Jolene Gremmel; brothers Rick Gremmel, Rad Gremmel, Bob Vandiver, Larry Vandiver; and nephew Clayton Elliott.
Surviving family includes his wife Karen Vandiver; son Mike Vandiver; grandchildren Corbin Townsend, Saige Vandiver, and Sierra Vandiver, all of Goodland; brothers J.W. Vandiver of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Reggie Gremmel of Tescott; sister Amanda McKenzie of Soloman ; brother-in-law Lyle Chatfield, his wife Brenda of Goodland, and their children Bryce of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, and Heath of Wichita; sister-in-law Kathy Elliott, her husband Jack of Colby, and their son Derek, of Lawrence.
Friends may share their respects on Thursday, December 17, from 4:00 until 6:00 PM MT, at Koons Chapel in Goodland.
The funeral will be Friday, December 18, at 10:30 AM MT, at the First United Methodist Church in Goodland, with Pastor Lyn Linde officiating. Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.
