Longtime Sherman County, Kansas resident Alfred G. Bollig, 88, went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 23, 2014. He died in Dalhart, Texas, where he had been a resident for the last eight years.
He was born December 19, 1925, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Elizabeth (Meier) and Peter Bollig, and also the tenth of thirteen children. Alfred grew up on a farm in the Saline River area, near Plainville, Kansas, and had a great appreciation of nature and the outdoors. He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II.
He and Bonnie Sylvester were married on November 26, 1951, in Goodland, Kansas, and they had four children. After working for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for thirty-one years, he retired in 1984. He was also a farmer and continued to farm until the late 1980’s. He loved keeping busy, enjoying gardening, reading, and spending time with family, especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his wife Bonnie Bollig; his parents; brothers Andy, Gus, Hank, Eugene, Fidelis, Edward, Bill, Jimmy, and Jerome; and sisters Josephine, Vera, and Rose Marie.
Surviving family includes his four children Mary Dalton and her husband Jerry of Lufkin, Texas; Kathleen Lysford and her husband Troy of Dalhart, Texas; Sara Bollig of Goodland; Tom Bollig and his wife Annette of Overland Park; six grandchildren Aaron Lindal of Derby; Amanda Jurajda of Dalhart, Texas; Aaron Bollig of Sharon Springs; Molly Bollig of Goodland; Helen Bollig and T.J. Bollig, both of Overland Park; and eight great-grandchildren Tierra, Corbin, Cayden, Gavin, Ella, Hayley, Alyssa, and Braylen.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, August 27, at 10:00 AM MT, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Goodland, with Father Norbert Dlabal presiding. Burial, with military honors, will follow at the Goodland Cemetery.
Friends may share their respects on Tuesday, from 5:00 until 6:30 PM MT, at Koons Chapel in Goodland. Vigil and rosary will follow at 6:30 PM MT.
